today is the Perihelion, the day planet Earth reaches its closest point to the sun for all of 2017 - only 91,404,322 miles away approximately!
That’s 3,101,579 miles closer than it will be during the aphelion in July (Earth’s most distant point to to the sun). Seems like it should be the reverse, but it’s the tilt of our world’s axis that creates winter and summer, not sun distance.
